OIA champ Kahuku ousted in state volleyball 1st round

Kaua'i High School knocked off O'ahu Interscholastic Association runner-up Kalani and went on to win its pool last night in Nissan State Girls Volleyball first-round action at McKinley Gym.

Kaua'i defeated Kalani 15-9, 15-2 and Seabury Hall 15-10, 15-9 to finish 2-0 in Pool D. The Red Raiders (10-0) will play Pool C runner-up St. Joseph (16-3) in a 7:15 quarterfinal tonight at Blaisdell Arena.

In other action at McKinley, OIA champion Kahuku (10-5) was eliminated after losing to St. Joseph and Punahou. St. Joseph defeated the Red Raiders 15-13, 12-15, 15-13 and Punahou won 15-5, 11-15, 15-9.

Punahou (15-2) finished 2-0 in Pool C and will play Kalani (13-2) at 4:45 p.m. Kalani advanced by defeating Seabury Hall 15-13, 4-15, 15-5.

At the Kamehameha Schools' Kekuhaupi'o Fieldhouse, Hilo won its pool by defeating Lana'i 15-4, 15-2 and Wai'anae 15-6, 15-6. The Vikings (15-1) will play Pool A runner-up Pearl City (12-3) at 6 p.m.

In other action at Kekuhaupi'o, Iolani won Pool A by defeating Hawai'i Prep 15-9, 15-7 and Pearl City 15-6, 15-10. The Raiders (17-0) will play Wai'anae (12-3) in today's first quarterfinal at 3:30.

The quarterfinal winners will advance to tomorrow's afternoon semifinals at 2 p.m. and 3:30, to be followed by the third-place match at 5:30 and the championship match at 8.
