Interfaith gathering planned

Advertiser Staff

Bob Fitts, a Christian singer from the Big Island, and a dozen O'ahu ministers will lead a Thanksgiving interfaith gathering Wednesday at Stan Sheriff Center.

"For Such a Time" was organized by Hawaiian Island Ministries after the events of Sept. 11 spurred several pastors to call the group looking for a way to connect through prayer. After a gathering of 85 pastors and their spouses in October, Wednesday's Thanksgiving service was announced. The arena can hold 9,000 worshippers.

The two-hour prayer and worship service begins at 7 p.m. Music will be provided by the New Hope Oahu worship band and a 50-member interchurch choir, as well as a 30-member interchurch halau.

At least 18 social service agencies will staff tables at the event to take requests for help and sign up volunteers. Attendees are encouraged to bring a canned food product or a 5-pound bag of rice to be distributed to food banks.
