UHH opens with an upset

David LaQua scored 25 points as Hawai'i-Hilo upset 20th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney, 91-84, last night in an NCAA Division II men's basketball game at the UHH gym.

LaQua made 10 of 15 free throws for Hilo, which made 32 of 47 foul shots to Nebraska-Kearney's 14-for-16.

Derek Mgbeke scored 18 points, Scott Prather 15 and Ryan Hogue 11 for the Vulcans (1-0), who outscored the visitors 57-29 in the second half.

Nick Svehla had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and Anthony Harms added 14 points for Nebraska-Kearney (0-1).
