Kawai Nui plan scaled back

A permit request for the Kawai Nui Marsh Management Plan improvements moved forward last week, after the state Department of Land and Natural Resources withdrew its request to build a volunteer center, pens for sick animals and a tool shed.

The agency wants to develop a wildlife habitat restoration project that would create a 71-acre shallow mud flat and restore 2,800 feet of stream-bank habitat. The project calls for removing about 17 acres of vegetation and installing 16,200 feet of fence for predator control.

The Zoning Committee of the Honolulu City Council moved the resolution forward by a 5-0 vote.
