Nordstrom shows interest in our economic future

It's heartening to know that in spite of tough economic times, Mainland retailers still have confidence in Hawai'i as a major shopping destination.

As Macy's takes over bankrupt Liberty House, Nordstrom is planning a department store in what is now the aging Ward Warehouse complex. The upscale three-level department store would anchor a proposed $150 million shopping center.

The redevelopment plan will allow Victoria Ward Ltd. to develop its archaic Ward Warehouse, which was intended to be only a temporary structure when it was built in 1974.

While it's sad that Mainland retailers are increasingly taking the place of local businesses, we anticipate that Nordstrom's Hawai'i debut will bring diversity and competition to the market, and elevate Kaka'ako's growing reputation as a vibrant shopping and entertainment mecca.

It serves a strong message that long-term, Hawai'i's economic prospects are sound.
