Want to know some of the secrets to the success of last season's University of Hawai'i men's basketball team?
"The Rainbow Circle of Excellence" offers an insider's look at the players, coaches and support group who helped make last season's run to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearance so memorable.
The 146-page book was authored by head coach Riley Wallace, with assistance from Drs. Michael D'Andrea and Judy Daniels, the team's sport counseling and development specialists.
The book focuses on the Circle of Excellence "an interlocking series of useful skills and traits shared by successful people who lead effective lives" and how the team used it as its foundation for success.
The book also includes insights and anecdotes on almost every player on last year's team. Wallace also shares his thoughts on the recruiting of foreign athletes, and how he successfully blended seven players from foreign countries with eight others from America.
D'Andrea and Daniels offer a glimpse into the role mental aspects played for last season's team.
In addition to basketball, the book offers advice on how the Circle of Excellence can relate to every day life.
As Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski writes in the book's foreword: "Why read Riley's book? Because you're a college basketball fan who likes Cinderella stories. Because you're curious about what a basketball coach could possibly have to say about leading a life of excellence. Or, best of all, because The Rainbow Circle of Excellence is full of useful ideas for realizing your own potential for greatness."
The book has a retail price of $14.95, and is currently available in most book stores around the state, as well as the Rain-Bow-Tique shops at the Stan Sheriff Center and Ward Centre.
