HPU cross country runners achieve All-America honors

Three Hawai'i Pacific University women's cross country runners earned All-America honors after finishing among the top 25 at the NCAA Division II National Championships yesterday at Slippery Rock, Pa.
Nina Christensen finished the 6-kilometer race in 21 minutes, 45 seconds for sixth place among 180 runners.
Lisa Blomme finished 12th in 22:08 and Sayuri Kusutani placed 24th in 22:29.
Hannah Lawrence of Western State (Colo.) won the race in 21:24.
Christensen was an All-American in 1999 and Blomme in 2000.
In the men's 10-kilometer race, Hawai'i Pacific's Christian Madsen finished 31st among 180 runners in 33:01.
BASKETBALL
BYUH falls in final: Austin Nichols had 33 points and seven rebounds, and Issac Gildea added 23 points as Humboldt State (Calif.) defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 119-84, in the championship game of the Hamilton Classic last night at Davis, Calif.
Alexus Foyle scored 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting for BYUH. Scott Salisbury, who had 22 points and 21 rebounds Friday night against host UC Davis, got in early foul trouble and eventually fouled out. He finished with 16 points and 12 rebounds, and was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Seasiders committed 31 turnovers and shot just 42.6 percent from the field.
Humboldt State improved to 2-0. BYUH (1-1) will play at Chico State tomorrow night.
HPU opens with a win: Nash Subotic scored 19 points as Hawai'i Pacific University opened its season with a 70-60 victory over 20th-ranked Nebraska-Kearney in an NCAA Division II game last night at Mid-Pacific Institute gym.
Larz Stewart scored 14 points, and Nic Walters and John Avilla each added 10 for the Sea Warriors.
SAILING
UH sailor in seventh: University of Hawai'i sophomore Bryan Lake is in seventh place with 78 points after 11 races in the ICSA/Vanguard Singlehanded North American Sailing Championships at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
The final five races of the championships will be held today.
Old Dominion's Brad Funk leads with 35 points. Old Dominion has a strong history in the event, winning 11 championships since 1982.
MEETING
QB Club: University of Hawai'i head football coach June Jones, UH quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison and 'Aiea High head football coach Wendell Say are scheduled to speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at the Pagoda International Ballroom.
Lunch begins at 11 a.m. with the program to follow at noon.
VOLLEYBALL
Wean a true student-athlete: Andrea Wean, senior middle blocker for Hawai'i Pacific University, was named to the Verizon Academic All-America College Division Volleyball All-District VIII Team.
Wean, an advertising major, was named to this season's All-Pacific West Conference first team and has received Dean's List honors after earning a 3.60 GPA.

Pro Bowl tickets: Tickets for the Feb. 9 NFL Pro Bowl are available through Ticket Plus, which has 42 outlets statewide, including at 17 Foodland stores, as well as at military bases.
Tickets at Foodland can be purchased between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. No time frame was given in an earlier report.

Because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the Pro Bowl was moved from Feb. 3, the first time the NFL all-star game will be held on a Saturday since it was staged in Honolulu in 1980.
