Aloha United Way exceeds goal

Advertiser Staff

The Aloha United Way yesterday surpassed its 2001 fund-raising goal after it received a $1 million donation from a local organization.

The contribution was made by the Hartley Foundation, a private organization created to help the needy. It is headed by Sandy and Michael Hartley, the founder and former chairman of Cheap Tickets Inc.

The beneficiaries of the donation will be: Child and Family Service, $500,000; Hawai'i Foodbank, $250,000; Catholic Charities, $125,000; and the Salvation Army, $125,000. The donation pushed AUW over its 2001 campaign goal of $13.6 million. Last month AUW officials were projecting a $1.7 million shortfall.

But they said more money needs to be raised because of increased needs resulting from recent layoffs, such as emergency housing, utility and rental assistance.

The Hartley Foundation also contributed $100,000 each to Easter Seals Hawai'i and Special Olympics Hawai'i.
