Tax preparer gets $2,000 fine

Rosalinda DeGuzman, a tax return preparer for RB Tax Service, has been fined $2,000 and placed on probation for five years by Circuit Judge Michael Town after pleading guilty to six felony counts of aiding in the preparation of false income tax returns.

The false preparation stemmed from overstating of itemized deductions, state Tax Director Marie Okamura said.

DeGuzman, who was sentenced Tuesday, was also ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and to write a personal letter of apology.

All principal tax return preparers at RB Tax Service except Vivian Soong have pleaded guilty to multiple felony tax violations, according to the state Department of Taxation. Soong pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on Monday. Her trial is scheduled for Jan. 22, 2002.

Police plan holiday driver checkpoints

The Honolulu Police Department is planning checkpoints around the island to catch alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers, starting today and through the holiday season.

The checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, every weekend in December, and every day from Christmas through the New Year.

Through Nov. 20, the department had tallied 72 traffic deaths in 67 traffic collisions on O'ahu, compared to 59 fatalities from 52 collisions last year.

Forty percent of fatal collisions this year were related to substance abuse. Speed was determined to be a cause in nearly 60 percent of the fatal accidents.
