New dengue fever cases bring total to 87
Advertiser Staff
Two more cases of dengue fever have been identified in H?na on Maui, bringing the statewide total to 87.
The two new patients had the disease in early November. There are now 54 confirmed cases in the H?na area, where the mosquito-borne disease was first identified. The total number of cases for Maui is 64; O'ahu has 18; and Kaua'i has five.
Health officials say that Hawai'i's outbreak appears to be under control and is far from the epidemic proportions seen in other areas such as Tahiti, which has recorded close to 30,000 cases.
The Health Department is conducting an aggressive campaign to control the mosquito population, which experts say is the best way to contain the disease.
