Fonoti a Football News All-American

Advertiser Staff

Nebraska offensive guard Toniu Fonoti was named to Football News' first-team All-America team, the weekly newspaper announced yesterday.

Fonoti, a 1999 graduate of Kahuku High and an Advertiser all-state selection in 1998, was one of four Cornhuskers named by Football News. Joining him on the first team was defensive back Keyuo Craver. Defensive lineman Chris Kelsay and quarterback Eric Crouch were second- and third-team picks, respectively.

Hawai'i wide receiver Ashley Lelie, a Radford High graduate, was named to the third team. (See related story on C3.)

Fonoti, a 6-foot-4, 340-pound junior, owns a Nebraska single-season record with 182 pancakes blocks in 11 games entering tomorrow's regular-season finale against Colorado. He has helped the Cornhuskers lead the nation in rushing with a 311.1 average per game. He also set a school single-game record with 32 pancakes against Texas Tech on Oct. 20.

Fonoti, a second-year starter and preseason All-America pick by numerous services, is a semifinalist for the Lombardi Award for the nation's top lineman.
