HONOLULU The Big Island was expected to get heavy showers and thunderstorms late last night and this morning, leading the National Weather Service to post a flood watch.
The watch, which was to remain in effect until 8 a.m., meant conditions were favorable for heavy rainfall and flooding.
Although flooding wasn't imminent, Big Island residents were urged to take necessary precautions to protect property. They were also told to be prepared to take quick action if a more serious warning was issued.
An active front and upper trough was approaching the islands from the northwest, while unstable tropical moisture was approaching from the southeast, forecasters said.
The convergence line was 150 miles southeast of Hilo, moving toward the northwest at 12 knots, they said.
