'Potter' viewers rave about Quidditch scene

USA Today

More than a week after the release of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," the movie is still a major buzz topic for young people around the globe.

If Harry Potter is a Quidditch wiz, the movie version of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" is a wiz at portraying the fantasy game, in which players swoop after several balls while riding on flying broomsticks, and fans are raving particularly about the movie's Quidditch scene.

"The Quidditch match was great and reminded me of the pod-racing scene from 'Phantom Menace,'" the first "Star Wars" prequel, said Jared L'Hoste, 14, of New Orleans.

Many moviegoers young and old, "Potter" book fans and not, said the scene, which took nearly six months to shoot, was the best in the effects-heavy film.

Rebecca Della-Porta, 9, of Cambridge, England, thought the entire film was brilliant. But "Quidditch was the best part — it looked amazing!"

Said Jonnie McVaugh, 14, of Lansing, Mich.: "I loved the Quidditch game. It looks like a lot of fun."

Scott McDonald of Crownsville, Md., and Brett Edelen of Aquasco, Md., both 14, went to the movie together and agreed that Quidditch was the coolest.

"Good graphics, bumping each other off the brooms and all," Brett said. "I didn't think it would be that rough. It kind of surprised me."

Said Scott: "Quidditch looked so real when they were flying."

Even those with a few more years (and special-effects experiences) behind them were impressed. Sarah Pearce, 28, of Glasgow, Scotland, said she'd never really been able to imagine the game. "The film really brought it to life for me."

Five-year-old Edmond Wrigley of Harpendon, England, liked Quidditch, too. But he zeroed in on one particular moment: "When Harry caught the Snitch in his mouth." Chris Tater, 10, of Charlotte, Mich., reports that the audience cheered during that part.

But some people were dazzled by almost the whole film.

"The special effects throughout were fantastic," said Kevin Michael, 18, of Warrensburg, Mo. "It's tough to pick a favorite scene."

He ultimately settled on the chess match with life-size game pieces. Other scenes mentioned as favorites included a battle with a giant mountain troll; Fluffy, the giant, three-headed dog who guards a trap door; and the climax, where the true evil is revealed and good is shown to triumph.

For London's Natasha Matthews, 8, the key moment wasn't a booming special-effects extravaganza, but a subtler sequence: "When Professor Flitwick decorated the Christmas tree, lifting up things with a magic wand and putting them on the tree."
