The name of the hiker, a Kahalu'u resident, was not released this morning, pending confirmation of his identity by the city medical examiner.

The search began shortly after 2 p.m. and continued until nightfall. This morning, the fire department assigned both ground and helicopter units to the search and soon found the victim, pronounced dead at the scene, said Capt. Richard Soo, department spokesman.

The man had been hiking with friends on a trail mauka of Swanzy Beach Park when he fell, Soo said.

"It does appear that his fall was at least 200 feet, if not 250," he added.
