Lucky goes local
The December issue of Lucky magazine, a favorite of the fashion conscious, features seven pages on shopping in Hawai'i.
It talks about what's hip and happening on the retail scene on the Big Island, Maui and O'ahu.
The reporter visited mainstream shopping locales such as Ala Moana and Waikiki, as well as out-of-the-way Holualoa, Kamuela and Pa'ia.
She found everything from bikinis
at Surf-n-Sea on the North Shore to cherry-print sleepwear at Eden in Kailua-Kona to edgy T-shirts in Waikiki at 88 Tees.

Say it with words
It seems likely that this Christmas season will be one where spirit will win out over "stuff." If you're looking for a gift that has that true meaning of the holiday about it, consider the Friends of the Library's Makana Akamai ("Gift of Knowledge") program, which allows you to donate a needed book in the name of a reading-loving friend or relative.
Makana Akamai brochures are available at all public libraries and list the names of books that library staff have designated as desirable to expand the collection or offer a list of frequently requested materials.
You can choose one of these or elect to let the staff select something they need. After you fill out a form and make the donation, a bookplate with the name of your honoree will be placed inside the book so everyone who uses it will know to whom to be thankful. Most of the books are under $20. Information: 536-4174.

Going back in time
Courtesy of Linda Arthur
Students in UH-Manoa's apparel product design and merchandising program went back in time to the Roaring '20s to learn more about the fashion and lifestyle of the era.
Fashions from the '20s are featured at the UH exhibit.
While the costume history class researched the lifestyle, technology and aesthetics of the time, the fashion sketching class produced artwork for an exhibit in the Costume Collection Gallery Room 112 in Miller Hall.
Life-size mannequins show bias-cut chemises with the requisite flapper fringe, velvet capes and tiaras with feathers. A stylish male mannequin in tails doffs his top hat in true '20s style.
The exhibit opens Sunday at noon and closes Dec. 19. Gallery hours: 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and noon-4 p.m. Sundays. Information: 956-2245.
