SATELE: Impressed by UH coaches
Kailua High School offensive lineman Sam Satele has made a verbal commitment to play for the University of Hawai'i football team next season.

Satele, a nephew of former UH standout Alvis Satele, said he also was offered recruiting visits to Nebraska, Brigham Young, Washington, Arizona and Utah. But he will not take any of those trips, after he called the Hawai'i coaches yesterday afternoon to announce his decision.

Satele has been a guest on the UH sidelines this season and said he was impressed by Hawai'i's staff, especially offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh.

"Every time I was with (the Warriors), they made it feel like home," Satele said. "Coach Cav made me feel comfortable. He seems like a good coach."

Satele, 6 feet 4 and 285 pounds, said he can do 21 bench press repetitions of 225 pounds and 20 reps of 315 on the squat. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.85 seconds.

Satele also is a two-year starter for the Surfriders' basketball team.

"UH is getting itself a steal," Kailua coach Darren Johnson said. "He's a student of the game and can play anywhere on the line."
