Mililani opens defense of title
Advertiser Staff
Three-time defending O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion Mililani appears primed for its regular season softball opener against Waialua, 1 p.m. Saturday at Mililani.
The Trojans are coming off a victory at the Waimea tournament over the weekend on Kaua'i.
"I think we're moving in the right direction," Mililani coach Mike Okimoto said. "Hopefully, we'll get to the big show (state tournament)."
For starters, the Trojans lost just two seniors, albeit key players in second-team all-state catcher Anuhea Diamond and shortstop Tiari Keliinoi.
But the Trojans still have first-team all-state center fielder Britney Shimamoto. With the loss of Keliinoi, the versatile Shimamoto will assume the shortstop position.
Also back for the Trojans is second-team all-state outfielder Jenna Rowland, who also will pitch. Another second-team returnee is third baseman/pitcher Miki Asamura, who tossed a one-hitter to beat Sacred Hearts in the championship of the Waimea tournament. Other key returnees include first baseman Adrienne Kasaoka, second baseman Karyna Wilkerson and pitcher/third baseman Johnna Rowland.
Others expected to contend in the West are Campbell, Leilehua, Waipahu and Pearl City.
The East contenders are expected to be Kailua, Castle, Roosevelt and Kaimuki.
