Amateurs lead pros at Burns golf

Jonathan Ota and Jarett Hamamoto led the Amateurs team with two victories over professionals Jerry Mullen and Tommy Hines on the first day of the Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup at Mid-Pacific Country Club yesterday.

The amateurs lead the pros 7-5 entering today's final round. Yesterday's rounds included a two-man best ball and alternate ball matches.

Ota and Hamamoto defeated Mullen and Hines 5 and 4 in the best ball match, and 3 and 2 in the alternate ball match.

The teams of 12 amateurs and 12 professionals will play individual matches today.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Chaminade wins: Leon Ballard scored 17 points to lead Chaminade to an 88-73 victory over North Park University of Chicago last night at McCabe Gym.

It was Chaminade's first victory of the season after three losses at the Maui Invitational last week.

Ballard hit 8 of 13 field goal attempts. Jaborri Thomas had 15 points and Igor Beljanski 14 for the Silverswords. The 'Swords shot 64 percent from the field, while North Park shot 40 percent.

Chaminade's Mike Donegan had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Tyrone Hueston led North Park with a game-high 18 points. Irving Richardson added 16 points.

The Silverswords led 46-34 at halftime.

Chaminade plays San Francisco State at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at McCabe.
