Shipment of flu shots for Longs arrives

A delayed flu vaccine shipment has arrived, and flu-shot clinics at Longs Drug Stores on O'ahu will start up next month.

Flu-shot clinics at the 22 Longs stores were postponed a month because of a shipping delay from the manufacturer, said Karen Luberts, the office coordinator for Castle Community Care, which has a contract with the company.

The shipment of 700 vials arrived last week from the manufacturer and will provide 7,000 flu shots, Luberts said. The clinics will start at two Longs locations, Mo'ili'ili and Mililani Town Center, on Dec. 3 followed by different locations on different days.

The flu shots cost $20 and pneumonia shots cost $30. It's free for people who have HMSA Classic, HMSA 65C Plus or Medicare Part B, Luberts said.

Residents can visit their doctor for flu shots, and if their doctor doesn't have the vaccines, they should go to nearby clinics, said Judy Strait-Jones, the state Health Department's projects coordinator and health educator. Free flu shots are offered through many organizations.

People at high risk for complications from the flu are: those 65 and older, those who have a history of heart disease, asthma, diabetes, liver problems and expectant mothers who are at least three months pregnant.
