Stabbings prompt police investigation
Police have opened an attempted murder investigation in connection with a fight early today outside Players Sports & Entertainment Club in which two men were stabbed. The fight broke out shortly before 2 a.m. outside 1442 University Ave., involving two men, ages 20 and 23, and a group of eight other men.
The two men were stabbed, and the group of eight fled the scene in two vehicles, according to police.
Motorcyclist hurt critically in crash
A 45-year-old man was in critical condition today at The Queen's Medical Center after a motorcycle accident last night in a Kane'ohe residential neighborhood.
Police said the man was riding his yellow 2000 Harley-Davidson, headed south on Po'okela Street, when he braked, lost control of the motorcycle and fell to the roadway. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious head injuries.
Speed may have been a cause of the accident, police said, but traffic investigators had not determined this morning whether alcohol was a factor.
Attempted 'Aiea car break-in foiled An attempted auto break-in was foiled last night in 'Aiea, when two witnesses subdued the armed suspect before police arrived on the scene.
One witness spotted the male suspect, 26, as he attempted to break into a car parked at 98-025 Hekaha St. at 8:30 p.m.
The suspect fled, and the witness pursued him. The suspect then threatened his pursuer with a gun.
2 Hilo men held in burglary, extortion
Two Hilo men were charged yesterday with burglary, extortion and terroristic threatening in connection with an incident that occurred earlier in the week.
Anthony Luppino Jr., 37, and Anson Cordero, 44, are being held in the Hilo police cellblock in lieu of $17,000 bail each.
They were arrested Wednesday for a Monday incident in which two men called another Hilo man, demanded $200 and threatened him with a gun. They told police the man had promised to loan them the money.
They also are accused of visiting the victim's rooming house in the Pu'ueo area earlier Monday and taking a guitar from the house.
Robber held after returning to scene
A suspected burglar who returned to the scene of the crime while police investigators were still there was arrested last night at a Waikiki apartment building.
The suspect, 36, was seen at about 4 p.m. yesterday entering a storage room and removing boxes at 2387 Ala Wai Blvd., but the witness didn't know it was unauthorized and did not report it to building management.
The case was reported to police at about 10:15 p.m., and while police were at the scene, the suspect returned for some belongings, was identified by the witness and arrested.
Navy suspends search for sailor
The Navy yesterday suspended the search for a sailor missing from a Pearl Harbor-based destroyer who is presumed to have been lost at sea in the Indian Ocean.
Officials said a 50-hour search failed to locate Petty Officer 2nd Class Randy Glenn Whitaker, 44, of Trinidad, Texas. Whitaker was reported missing Tuesday at the 6 a.m. muster aboard the guided missile destroyer USS Russell.
The search involving the Russell, the guided missile cruiser USS Vincennes, two SH-60B Seahawk helicopters, and two Navy P-3C Orion Maritime Patrol aircraft covered 3,500 square nautical miles, the Navy said.
The Russell, which left Pearl Harbor on Oct, 25, was en route to a six-month deployment to the Middle East.
Bail at $341,000 in sex assault case
WAILUKU, Maui A Kahului man remained in custody at the Maui Community Correctional Center yesterday after being indicted on 39 counts of sexually assaulting a juvenile female.
Bail for Erwin Fagaragan, 37, who was arrested Tuesday, is $341,000.
A Maui grand jury indicted Fagaragan on 29 counts of first-degree sexual assault and 10 counts of third-degree sexual assault. Prosecutors allege the acts took place between June 1995 and May 1998, and involve a girl who was younger than 14.
Fagaragan is expected to appear for arraignment next week in 2nd Circuit Court.
Police arrest robbery suspect
Police arrested a 23-year-old man yesterday in connection with the armed robbery of a video store Sunday in Wahiawa.
The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and California Avenue in Wahiawa, police said.
On Sunday, a robber entered Alpha Video on 70 Kukui St., gave the 19-year-old woman cashier a note demanding money, showed a knife, took the money and fled. The cashier was not injured.
Water main break closes school
Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews repaired two water main breaks yesterday, including one that forced the closure of Iolani School.
An 8-inch main broke at 4:09 a.m. on Kamoku Street near the intersection of Kapi'olani Boulevard and Date Street. Nearby apartments and the school were affected. The main was repaired at about 6 p.m.
At Akahi Street in Kalihi, crews repaired a 6-inch main that broke about 6 a.m., shutting down water service for four homes and six businesses.
