Hawai'i writers add moral to holiday stories for stage
A dozen stories by Hawai'i writers will be brought to life in Honolulu Theatre for Youth's annual presentation of "Christmas Talk Story."
Directed by HTY artistic director Mark Lutwak and performed by Nara Springer, Shen Sugai and Tanner Henderson, the show addresses the holiday experiences with a modern moral or mini-epiphany in each of children in the Islands.
For instance, there's Diane Aoki's "I Am Thankful For ..." in which a youngster discovers her gratitude for her mother, teacher and best friend as a tale of elementary-school 'uku (lice) unfolds.
The actors address the audience directly, narrating the tale while in the role of the central child character in each story.
"Christmas Talk Story" will be performed at 2:30, 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 8 and 15 at Tenney Theatre, 224 Queen Emma Square.
Tickets are $10 general, $7.50 for students in high school or college, $5 for kids 3-12 and seniors; keiki under 2 are admitted free but must have a ticket.
