Midnight Ohana to start UH basketball Oct. 12

The University of Hawai'i men's and women's basketball teams will tip-off the 2001-02 season with the annual Coors Light Midnight Ohana Oct. 12 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Wahine volleyball team will also play a match against Texas-El Paso that night at 7 p.m. Carnival games and activities will begin on the arena concourse shortly after the completion of the volleyball match.
The basketball festivities will begin around 11:45 p.m., with the introduction of both the men's and women's teams. The men's team is also scheduled to challenge the women's team in a 3-point shootout, and then the men's team will stage a slam-dunk contest.
A men's intrasquad scrimmage will begin shortly after midnight.
General admission is free, although reserved VIP seating is available for $25. For VIP tickets, call 956-6501.
The UH men's team finished 17-14 last season, won the Western Athletic Conference Tournament championship, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in school history.
The UH women's team went 26-8 last season and advanced to the semifinals of the WNIT.
GOLF
Vulcans 16th: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo golf team finished 16th with a 921 total in the Adams Cup at Rhode Island.
Garrett Okamura shot a 13-over 224 to lead the Vulcans.
New Mexico won the team title with an 854, followed by Michigan State (861), with Minnesota and Vanderbilt tied at 864.
Vanderbilt's Mark Donnell and New Mexico's Wil Collins shared medalist honors at 4-under 207.
Hawai'i-Hilo will play in the Wolfpack Invitational at the University of Nevada, starting Sunday.
State Open deadline: Monday is the entry deadline for exempt golfers for the Williams & Associates Hawai'i State Open. The tournament will be Oct. 24-27 at Makaha Resort.
For those who need to qualify, entry deadline is Oct. 15.
The tournament is played over 54 holes, with a Wednesday Pro-Am. There is a cut after 36 holes.
There will be 108 professionals and amateurs in the men's division. Pros are playing for a $35,000 purse. The women's and senior divisions each have 24 entries, with pros playing for an $8,000 purse.
The tournament is open to professionals, amateur men with a 6.6 handicap index or less, and female amateurs with a 10.1 handicap index or less.
POWER AID
Muscles for charity: The first Hawaiian Powerfest, a charity event for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Men of War Youth Program, will be held Oct. 27 at the Royal Kunia Park and Ride.
The event, which features competitions in strongman, bench press and arm wrestling, will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. All competitions will have weight classes.
