Tip-off
Rock concert slated for Kualoa

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

The Cypress Hill Smoke Out, a gathering of rock acts, will be the fall's first heavy-duty blowout, set for Oct. 21 at Kualoa Ranch in Windward O'ahu.

The lineup will feature:

  • Cypress Hill, whose urban rap sounds from Los Angeles' Latin quarter advocate marijuana. Signature cuts include "I Wanna Get High," "Legalize It" and "Insane in the Brain."
  • Pennywise, a Hermosa Beach, Calif., punk revival group known for "City Is Burning."
  • Suicidal Tendencies, the Venice Beach, Calif., combo linked with that skateboarding classic, "Possessed To Skate."
  • Kottonmouth Kings, an Orange County, Calif., group specializing in psychedelic hip-hop and punk rock, with exposure in the "Scream 2" movie soundtrack.
  • Guttermouth, America's answer to Mr. Bean, which has the dubious honor of having been the subject of threats from Osama bin Laden's terrorist organization, resulting in the cancellation of the group's European tour because of safety concerns.

Another act will be announced.

Gates will open at 10 a.m., with the concert scheduled for 11 a.m.

Tickets: $30; on sale at Tower Records Kahala Mall and Pearl Kai Shopping Center, Tower Video Kapi'olani, Cheapo Music Puck's Alley and Pearl Kai, Hungry Ear, Pearl Harbor Block Arena, the ITT Marine Corps Base Hawai'i, Schofield ITR, University of Hawai'i at Manoa Campus Center and other Ticket Plus outlets.

'Surprise Party' spinoff of TV show

Big Bear in the Big Blue House Live's "Surprise Party," a 90-minute show of songs and dances for children and family audiences, will open a 15-show, eight-day run starting Nov. 1 at the Hawai'i Theatre.

The production, from VEE Entertainment, which also produced "Sesame Street Live," is based on "Surprise Party," the Emmy-winning TV show by Jim Henson Television that airs on the Disney Channel.

The production assembles a cast of characters that include Bear, the gentle seven-foot host who dances a mean cha-cha; Tutter, the tiny mouse with a giant heart who is the focus of the surprise party; Ojo, the little girl bear; Pip and Pop, two rambunctious purple otters; Treelo, a green and blue lemur; and Luna, the moon.

The theatrical production, like the TV show, showcases Muppets that educate and entertain through childhood exploration. Bear is host to his family of friends; the concept of the show is to dwell on concepts tapping art, shapes, water, friendship, safety and more through song, dance and sketches.

The puppets will perform as follows:

  • Nov. 1, 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 2, 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 3, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Nov. 4, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
  • Nov. 8, 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 9, 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 10, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
