Ryan Lum's right knee was swollen and painful last night, but that was nothing compared to the hurt he felt watching his Kailua High School football team lose to Kahuku last week.
Lum caught a game-high seven passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, which boosted Kailua's record to 5-1, 4-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red Conference. McKinley fell to 3-3, 2-3.
The Surfriders lost to Kahuku, 48-7, at home last week.
"That hurt bad," said Lum, who had watched from the sidelines. "We're a lot better team than that. Tonight, we wanted to make a statement and show everybody what we can do."
Lum played on the scout team during practice all week and was doubtful to start. But once the game started, he did not miss a beat.
Lum made the big plays on offense and also contributed greatly on special teams with 54 return yards, giving him 168 all-purpose yards on 13 touches.
"It was good to have him back," Kailua coach Darren Johnson said. "He makes things happen."
Running back Brenton Harbottle led the Surfriders' ground attack, rushing for 130 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries. His 15-yard touchdown run with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter broke a 14-14 tie and proved to be the winning margin.
Kailua's defense limited McKinley to 47 total yards, but the Surfriders also hurt themselves with 13 penalties for 129 yards.
