Waipahu rallies to beat Roosevelt

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

WAIPAHU — Quarterback Paulo Aga's 15-yard touchdown pass to Kawika Raymondo with 28 seconds left rallied Waipahu past Roosevelt, 27-22, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference football last night at Masa Yonamine Stadium.

Roosevelt took the ensuing kickoff to its 27 and three plays later, moved as far as the Waipahu 45 with a half-second to play. But quarterback Chris Mols long pass toward the end zone to Shown Francis was incomplete as time ran out.

The Marauders (5-1 OIA, 6-1 overall) moved into sole possession of second place in the White and handed the Rough Riders (4-1, 4-2) their first loss of the season.

"This is a huge one," Waipahu coach Todd Fujimori said. "The playoffs are our goal and this puts us in a good place. We're in control of our destiny. We don't have to hope for people to win, so it was a huge game."

The game-winning score was set up after the Marauders, trailing 22-21, lost the ball on downs at the Roosevelt 10 with 2:23 left. From there the Rough Riders failed to make a first down on three running plays and were forced to punt.

"We were looking to get a running first down, but that didn't work out for us," Roosevelt coach Lester Parrilla said.

Then Branden Chung, who caught touchdown passes of 53 and 9 yards from Aga that gave Waipahu a 14-0 first quarter lead, returned a punt 32 yards to the Roosevelt 15 with 35 seconds left. On first down, Aga rolled right, saw his primary receiver covered, but found Raymond open.

"Everyone was still in the game," said Aga, who was 5-of-9 for 89 yards with three TD passes. "Nobody put their heads down."

The Marauders could have. After linebacker Fritz Crighton's 83-yard interception return for a touchdown gave Waipahu a 21-6 with 1:20 left in the first half, the Rough Riders responded with 16 unanswered points.

A 27-yard TD pass from Mols to Matthew Terukina with 24 seconds left in the half pulled the Rough Riders to 21-12.

Then Waipahu lost the ball on a bad pitch by Aga at the Waipahu 35. After a two-yard loss, Mols hit Corey Higa on a 33-yard pass to Waipahu 4. Three plays later, Mols scored on a 1-yard run with 7:23 left in the third quarter to pull Roosevelt to 21-19.

Early in the fourth quarter, Waipahu was forced to punt from its 31, but a high snap from center lost 14 yards, giving Roosevelt possession at the Waipahu 17. But it had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Cameron Kimura that gave the Rough Riders their first lead of the game at 22-21 with 8:26 left in the game.

Waipahu took over with 8:16 before having its drive stopped after a five-yard pass from Aga to Chung on fourth-and-9 at the Roosevelt 15. That's when the Marauders' defense stiffened, forcing the Rough Riders to punt and set up their game-winning score. .
