KIHEI, Maui — Ancient Hawaiian fishponds will be the topic of this month's free lecture at the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

The speaker for Tuesday's event will be environmental planning consultant Joe Farber, author of "Ancient Hawaiian Fishponds: Can Restoration Succeed on Moloka'i."

Farber will discuss the history of Hawaiian fishponds and how they function. He will also describe restoration efforts around the state.

Farber has been retained by 'Ao'ao O Na Loko I'a O Maui (Association of the Fishponds of Maui) to assist in the planning of the Ko'ie'ie fishpond restoration project in Kihei. He continues to assist Project Loko I'a, a community-based effort to restore and reuse the fishponds of Moloka'i for cultural and subsistence purposes.

The lecture, sponsored by the marine sanctuary and the Maui fishponds group, will begin at 7 p.m. at sanctuary headquarters, 726 S. Kihei Road.
