Mountain Apple Co. has teamed up Charley's Taxi to provide popular current Hawaiian music — and explanatory play lists — in all Charley's cabs on routes to and from the airport and Waikele Premium Outlets. The tapes will feature, among others, the best-selling music of such Mountain Apple artists as The Brothers Cazimero, Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwo'ole, Hapa, Willie K and Sean Na'auao.

Stanford Carr, president of Stanford Carr Development, has announced that solar water heating systems will be standard in all 63 homes in both phases of his 'Olena subdivision at Kehalani, Maui. The solar project, in partnership with Maui Electric Co. Inc., he said, becomes the first time a developer in Hawai'i has supplied solar heating as a mandatory feature for an entire subdivision. The solar inclusion qualifies home buyers for a MECO $1,000 rebate for the cost of the system and a 35 percent state tax credit. It also results in lower monthly electric bills.

• A Samsonite Co. Store has opened in the Waikele Premium Outlets shopping center, adding to such manufacturer-direct shops as Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet, Anne Klein, Guess, Polo Jeans Factory Store, tommy Hilfiger and Banana Republic.

Guy Ting, owner of Sweets and Treats in Wailuku and Kahului, Maui, has opened the second Dairy Queen/Orange Julius Treat Center on Maui, at the Pi'ilani Village Shopping Center in Kihei. The pairing of the two product lines, a concept that began between the two on the Mainland in 1987, becomes the 15th in the state. The opening comes as Diary Queen celebrates its 61st anniversary, and Orange Julius its 75th.

• A Subway Sandwiches and Salads has opened in a kiosk at the 'ewa end of Ward Warehouse, near the stage. The new store is owned and operated by Nikolay Tenev and Dimitar Lembrev.

Papa John's Pizza Hawai'i has opened its 15th location, in Kapolei, one of the first tenants in the new Farrington Commercial Center, 563 Farrington Highway, Suite E, serving a Leeward O'ahu area from Kapolei to Makakilo, Barbers Point and Campbell Industrial Park. The store's general manager is Walter Howard, former assistant manager of the chain's Kane'ohe location.

Hawai'i USA Federal Credit Union has opened its first Neighbor Island location in the Queen Ka'ahumanu Shopping Center office building in Kahului. The Maui branch will offer 24-hour ATM service and access to the credit union's Internet bill payment banking service, as well as a phone link to an automated voice response system. The new Hawai'i USA location is in the old GE Capital site, next to City Bank.
