HONOLULU

Federal holiday observed today

Today is Discoverers' Day in Hawai'i (Columbus Day on the Mainland), observed in the Islands as a federal, but not a state or county, holiday. State and city schedules remain unchanged for rubbish pickup and landfills, bus service, traffic and street parking, open markets and libraries, schools and universities. Schedules for most tourist attractions remain unchanged.

  • GOVERNMENT: Federal offices closed; city and state offices open.
  • MAIL: All post offices closed; no regular business or residential delivery. Regular (blue) collection box pickup; Express Mail delivered.
  • FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS: Most banks, savings and loans, and credit unions closed. The stock market will be open.
  • BLOOD BANK: Dillingham headquarters open; downtown center always closed on Mondays.

Boys' capture to be discussed

A residents' task force set up to monitor the youth sex offender facility located at Waimano Home Road in Pearl City will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Manana Community Park recreation center to discuss the recent capture of two patients.

The boys, 15 and 16, where being treated in Benchmark Behavioral Health System's juvenile sex offender program, and escaped while on a group outing in Honolulu three months ago.

Both boys had completed treatment and were three weeks from being discharged when they escaped. The boys committed no known offenses while free, said program director James Bailey.
