Honolulu women are tennis champions

A women's team from Honolulu, representing the USTA Hawai'i Pacific Section, captured the national title at the USA League Tennis 4.0 Adult National Championships yesterday at Randolph Park in Tucson, Ariz.

Honolulu defeated Hendersonville, Ky., 4-1, in the championship match. Earlier in the day, Honolulu advanced with a 3-2 semifinal victory over San Diego.

Meanwhile, a men's team from Kailua finished third in the 3.5 Senior National Championships at the Riviera Resort & Racquet Club in Palm Springs, Calif.

Kailua defeated Providence, R.I., 3-0, in a playoff for third place. Earlier in the day, Baltimore beat Kailua, 2-1, in a semifinal match.

BASKETBALL

• Tickets on sale: Season tickets for the University of Hawai'i men's basketball season go on sale tomorrow at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

Box office hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, and phone sales (944-2697) operate from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tomorrow, phone sales hours are from noon to 4 p.m., but resume normal hours thereafter.

Ticket prices are: $250 lower level (includes $20 premium seat donation), $185 upper level-adult, $140 upper level-student, $105 Super Rooter (UH students), $175 Super Rooter (guest). Super Rooter tickets do not include the Rainbow Classic.

UH students may purchase one Super Rooter seat plus one guest per valid UH identification card.

The box office will be open during Friday's Midnight Ohana.

The Rainbows open their season Nov. 16 with the Nike Tip-Off Tournament.

RUNNING

• Run for the money: Ma'ema'e Elementary School will receive $5,000 as the top participant in yesterday's NikeTown 5K race in Waikiki.

A total of $45,000 — 100 percent of the entry fees from 3,000 participants — will be given to Oahu's public and private schools from kindergarten through 12th grade.

The money will be distributed to the runners' school of choice to support athletic programs and the refurbishment of playing equipment.
