Out of the top 100, Working Mother recognized 10 companies as exceptionally progressive:

NEW YORK — Merck & Co. offers on-site auto maintenance for employees at the pharmaceutical maker's New Jersey headquarters.

Software company SAS prepares take-home dinners and brings in a hairstylist three times a week.

Drug maker BristolMyers Squibb Co. sends baby formula to an employee's home for a newborn's first year.

These and other perks make these companies among the best at helping working moms balance their careers with the rest of their lives, according to Working Mother magazine, which issued its 16th annual list of top employers today.

"This is about meeting our employees' needs, not just building a day-care center," said Carol Evans, editor-in-chief of the magazine. "Many of the large companies provide on-site day care but they're only available at headquarters. We wanted to find out, 'Do they have other ways of compensating for that demographic?' "

The list — compiled before the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon — appears in the magazine's October issue and the magazine's Web site.

Choosing the companies is a year-long process, with editors and independent analysts sifting through stacks of questionnaires submitted by companies vying for acknowledgment.

IBM has been among the top 10 for 14 years — longer than any other company — and in the top 100 all 16 years. During the past five years, the number of female executives who work at IBM worldwide more than tripled, from 185 to 596. More than half are working mothers.

Sixty-nine percent of this year's winners offer on- or near-site child care, and more companies expanded or began offering elder care counseling and referral services.
