TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE: "The Ellen Show," 7 p.m., CBS; and "Reba," 9 p.m., WB (seen on KFVE after the volleyball game). Things have turned around instantly for a night that used to be devoid of decent laughs. Two new comedies — centering on female stars and producers — are well-made. "Ellen" reminds us of the basics: Once she steps off the soapbox, Ellen DeGeneres is a wonderful comic talent. She gives us the quiet feeling of someone who's never quite comfortable with life, sort of a modern Bob Newhart. Now that concept is boosted by the fact that she's returned to her hometown after her dot.com career soared and crashed. DeGeneres and Carol Leifer, once a key "Seinfeld" producer, add lots of wit. Tonight, Ellen frets about a makeover. Then come the second episodes of a terrific show. In "Reba," the kids are back from their honeymoon and ready, alas, to return to high school.

"Providence," 7 p.m., NBC. Syd's dad (Mike Farrell) continues his recovery with medical bills mounting and tempers fraying.

"Halloweentown 2: Kalabar's Revenge," 8 p.m., Disney Channel; repeats at 9:30 p.m. Last year, Disney drew a big audience with its light movie about a generation of witches. Now comes the sequel. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) finds that Halloweentown has lost its magic. Her granddaughter (Kimberly J. Brown) must find a magic book in order to prevent a hideous fate. If not, all humans will turn into whatever they portray on Halloween.

"Thieves," 8 p.m., ABC. So far, this flashy and fun show has had its heroes (played by John Stamos and Melissa George) stealing frivolous things. Now they must get back something important — a stolen liver that could save a life.

"Once and Again," 10 p.m., ABC. Steven Weber's character, who once had an affair with Judy, returns.
