The Board of Trustees of KCAA Pre-Schools of Hawai'i elected new executive officers for 2001-02. They are Jim McCoy, chairman; Alan Ito, vice president; Chuck Braden, treasurer; Tessa Dye, secretary.

Three new trustees were elected to the board: C.F. Damon Jr., attorney; Jeffrey Dinsmore, vice president and chief financial officer of Victoria Ward Ltd.; and Meymo Lemon Rego, community volunteer.

KCAA Pre-Schools of Hawai'i was established in 1894 as Hawai'i's first eleemosynary organization, offering the first teacher training and free kindergartens to Hawai'i's children. Today, the organization serves nearly 850 children at its seven accredited preschools.

Ronnell Nipp, a teacher at Wai'anae High School, has won the National Council of Teachers of English Leadership Development Award.

The program, which was developed to nurture new leaders, provides early career teachers with $500 to attend the NCTE Annual Convention, being held next month in Baltimore, Md.

Nipp, an 'Aiea resident, was nominated because she has never attended the convention and demonstrated capacity for leadership and willingness to serve the affiliate.

As a stipulation for the award, Nipp's negotiated term of service will include duties such as presenting at an affiliate conference, writing an article for an affiliate publication, membership on the affiliate board, assisting a board member and assisting with a workshop for new teachers.

The President's Student Service Award from George W. Bush will be given to the following students in recognition of their outstanding community service: Ernest Alvarez, Tresha Castillo and Bradley Apao.

Students who have stepped into service learning leadership positions are: Kane Mantyla, Kehau Spencer-Boyd, Bart Wilson, Jasmine Quek and Kaila Kitkouski.

Students who served for two semesters are: Marissa Adams, Grace Cagat, Ziwei Chen, Maille Chong, Sean Chun, Mary Jane Escalante, Melissa Frankel, Teresa Giang, Tracy Harding, Mizue Hasegawa, Nicole Palaualelo, Leah Rivera, Cynthia Taome and Honesto Zausa.

Professors who began and sustained the successful project, Adopt an Ahupua'a, which introduced students to Hawaiian culture and environmentalism are: Marion Kelly, University of Hawai'i-Manoa, anthropology; Nelda Quensell, University of Hawai'i-Kapi'olani, botany; and Ulla Hasager, University of Hawai'i-Manoa, anthropology.

Rep. Marcus Oshiro, majority leader in the state House of Representatives, has been named to a second term on the prestigious National Conference of State Legislatures Executive Committee.

NCSL serves as a resource for research, publications and consulting for the 50 state legislatures and U.S. Commonwealths and territories. Its aim is to improve the quality of legislatures, encourage interstate communication and cooperation and provide a clear voice for the states in Washington, D.C.

"I am honored and pleased by this appointment," said Oshiro. "And I am committed to my original goal of persuading NCSL to hold a major meeting in Hawai'i."
