ILH in playoffs for state volleyball tourney berths

Seven Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls' volleyball teams start a fifth-spot playoff tomorrow at various sites.

The fifth through 12th place teams play a single-elimination tournament to join the regular season's top four teams in a round-robin that determines the overall champion and second state berth.

Regular season champion Iolani (11-0), which has clinched one of the ILH's two state berths, second-place Punahou (10-1), third-place La Pietra (9-2) and fourth-place Kamehameha (8-3) have byes.

In top-bracket matches tomorrow, Hawai'i Baptist plays Hanalani, 3:45 p.m. at Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific takes on University, 4 p.m. at La Pietra.

In lower-bracket matches, Sacred Hearts plays Maryknoll, 3:45 p.m. tomorrow at Hawai'i Baptist, while on Monday, St. Francis plays St. Andrew's at 6 p.m. at La Pietra.

The winners advance to the next round on Oct. 16 at Sacred Hearts. The winners of that round advance to the next round on Oct. 20 at La Pietra.

Second round competition among the top five teams starts Oct. 22.

Meanwhile, the ILH boys resume their fifth-spot playoff today at Damien. At 4:30 p.m., Damien plays Lutheran and at 6 p.m., Maryknoll plays Hawai'i Baptist. The winners advance to tomorrow's playoff at 5:15 p.m. at Kamehameha.

Regular season champion Kamehameha (11-0), which clinched a state berth, second-place Punahou (10-1), third-place St. Louis (8-3) and fourth-place Iolani (8-3) had byes.

They begin second-round play tomorrow with Iolani visiting Kamehameha at 6:45 p.m. On Monday, Punahou plays at St. Louis at 5 p.m.


FOOTBALL

• St. Louis-Punahou redux: The defending ILH champion Crusaders (2-0-1) had problems with the Buffanblu (1-2) in a 25-16 win last time around. The teams meet at 7:30 tonight in an ILH doubleheader at Aloha Stadium. Iolani plays Pac-Five at 4:45 p.m.

The second-ranked Crusaders are led by quarterback Bobby George, whose favorite receivers, Jason Rivers and Kainoa Fernandez, have combined for 22 receptions for 448 yards and five touchdowns.

The No. 8 Buffanblu are led by multi-functional quarterback Todd LaFountaine, who leads his team in rushing and passing.

• Konawaena (3-0) at Honoka'a (3-0), 7:30 p.m. tomorrow: The battle of unbeatens in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation. And both have yet to meet the other unbeaten in the league, Kealakehe (4-0), which has a bye this week.

• No. 6 Castle (4-1) at Campbell (3-2), 7:30 tonight: A crucial O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red matchup in which a victory moves either team closer to securing a playoff berth. The top five teams in the Red advance to the playoffs, as well as the top three White.

Quarterback Joel Botelho, the Red's leading rusher (464 yards) and passer (1,159 yards), leads the Knights' offense, which is second in the conference, averaging 373 yards per game.

Sabers' running back Shauncey Saito, who also kicks extra points, is third in the conference in rushing (406 yards) and third in scoring (42 points).


BASKETBALL

• New coach: Keith Sugiura, a 1990 alumnus, has been named boys varsity basketball coach at Hawai'i Baptist Academy.

Sugiura has coached volleyball and basketball at HBA for the past six years. He also serves as head coach of the boys varsity volleyball team.

Sugiura replaces Glen Goya.
