Castle rolls to easy win, 23-0

'EWA BEACH Castle got a strong defensive effort to knock off Campbell, 23-0, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference football at the Sabers' field.
Quarterback Joel Botelho completed 15 of 30 passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for another to lead the sixth-ranked Knights (5-1 OIA, 5-2 overall) against the Sabers (3-3, 4-3).
But it was Castle's defense that shined when in counted. The Sabers reached the red zone the area between the Knights' 20 and the end zone three times, but were denied each time.
"Defensive was a pleasant surprise," Castle coach Nelson Maeda said. "Campbell has an explosive offense and our defense, I thought, did an excellent job."
What did not help the Sabers was that their top running back, Shauncey Saito, missed most of the first half after feeling dazed from a hit early in the game. He rushed the ball only twice for 11 yards in the first half. He might have helped the Sabers early in the second quarter, when they had first-and-goal at the Castle 6, but netted just three yards. An apparent 3-yard TD pass from Jonah Canionero to Ali'ikea Basham was nullified by off-setting penalties.
"That hurt us," Campbell coach Tumoana Kenessey said. "He's our everything. He's our punter, kicker. When he went down, that hurt us big time. It gave them the momentum there."
Campbell's defense did its best to stay in the game, limiting Botelho to 92 yards passing in the first half. In fact, the only TD in the first half was a nine-yard run by Botelho that gave Castle a 9-0 lead.
The Knights' special teams provided a jump start when Kawika Sebay blocked a punt in the end zone for a safety to give the Knights a 2-0 lead with 8:22 in the first quarter.
The second half was better for the Knights on both sides of the ball. The defense forced the Sabers to punt on four of their five series.
Botelho led scoring drives that resulted in TD passes of 5 yards to Ikaika Ho and 14 yards to Dayton AhNee.
The win helped the Knights move closer to securing a playoff berth with two weeks left in the regular season.
