A look at 1700s New England

By Zenaida Serrano Espanol

Keiki ages 9 through 12 can discover what colonial life was like in New England 300 years ago at "Colonial Camp-out," an overnight adventure from 6 p.m. Nov. 9 to 8 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

The event is "for kids to learn more about the Pilgrims," said Charlie Aldinger, an academy spokesman. The campout, designed especially for children in grades 4 through 6, includes a tour of the academy's exhibition, "Art and Life in Colonial America," which features re-creations of home, school and work areas from that time period.

Campers can make candles, weave on a loom, dress in period costumes, learn how settlers entertained themselves without television during long winter months, and more. The fee is $35 per child and includes an evening snack, breakfast, activities and supplies. Space is limited. For more information, call 532-8726.
