South Africans sweep Xterra off-road triathlon

South Africans captured the men's and women's titles at the Nissan Xterra World Championships at Wailea, Maui yesterday.

Conrad Stoltz was the overall winner in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 48 seconds. Kerry Classen of California was second in 2:37:02 and Jimmy Riccitello of Arizona third in 2:37:31.

Anke Erlank was the first woman finisher in 3:00:59. Cherie Touchette of California was second in 3:11:51 and Kerstin Weule of Colorado third in 3:12:37.

About 400 athletes participated in the off-road triathlon, which included a 1.5-kilometer swim at Wailea Beach, a 30-kilometer bike ride up and down the slopes of Haleakala and an 11-kilometer trail run from Makena Beach to the Outrigger Wailea Resort.

Top Hawai'i finishers were Lou Ortiz in 3:02:35, Peter Hursty in 3:10:46 and Chris Bettis in 3:24:19.

John Flanagan of Honolulu had the fastest swim of the day in 18 minutes, 19 seconds, and finished 177th in 3:51:23 in his first major triathlon. Glenn Wachtel of O'ahu was second in the swim in 18:55 and finished 145th overall in 3:40:22.

Michael Tobin, last year's winner, finished in 2:58:55, while his wife, Jenny, finished in 3:16:16.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

• Waipahu defeats Moanalua: Travis Atualevao rushed for 138 yards and one touchdown to lead the Waipahu Marauders to a 47-21 O'ahu Interscholastic Association victory over the host Moanalua Menehune Saturday night.

Waipahu is 6-1 in the OIA White Conference and 7-1 overall. Moanalua is 1-5 and 1-6.

Moanalua quarterback Ric Fukushima passed for 222 yards and three touchdowns, two to Jimmy Strombach.

• Hawai'i loses: Rice's Sarah Yoder scored on a kick into the upper left corner, 4 minutes, 10 seconds into overtime, to defeat the University of Hawai'i, 3-2, in a Western Athletic Conference women's match at Houston yesterday.

Rice is 3-6 overall and 2-1 in the WAC. Hawai'i is 4-6 and 1-1.

Carmel Hurley (5:23) and Arlene Devitt (68:05) scored for the Wahine.

Rice outshot the Wahine 15-13.
