Inmate hangs self at Halawa prison

A 47-year-old inmate was found hanging in his cell yesterday at the Halawa Medium Security Facility.

Thomas Rodrigues Jr., who has been at Halawa since April, used a sheet to hang himself, said state public safety director Ted Sakai. He was found at 11:30 a.m.

Rodrigues was convicted of three sex-assault offenses and sentenced to a maximum 20 years in prison, Sakai said. Police are investigating the death.

Wahiawa drug busts end in arrests

Six people were arrested after two drug busts near the Wahiawa police station last night. Police said they recovered crystal methamphetamine, drug scales and other drug paraphernalia.

They searched the buildings at 207 and 310 North Cane St. around 9 p.m., less than a mile from the Wahiawa police station at 330 North Cane St.

Four men were arrested, ages 35, 56, 40 and 32, and two women, ages 27 and 38, on suspicion of promoting dangerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. They have not been charged.

Complaints about drug activity had led plainclothes officers to investigate, police said, and the raids were handled by Crime Reduction Units and the SWAT team.

Man charged in alleged assault on ex-girlfriend

A 39-year-old accused of assaulting and robbing his ex-girlfriend in Kalihi on Saturday has been charged.

Richard Teixeira was charged yesterday with second-degree robbery, and his bail was set at $11,000.

Police said Teixeira argued with his ex-girlfriend, then he tried to take a television and radio from her apartment on Beckley Street.

When she woman stopped him, he grabbed her by the throat and threw her to the floor, police said. He was arrested Sunday on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Colorado tourist robbed at knifepoint

Police arrested a 26-year-old they are accusing of robbing a tourist from Colorado at knifepoint last night in Waikiki.

The tourist, 41, was walking on Seaside Avenue, police said. A robber took his money at knifepoint and fled with an accomplice.

The suspect was stopped by officers on Kalakaua Avenue minutes later and arrested on suspicion of first-degree robbery.

Big Island man killed in motorcycle accident

A 24-year-old South Kohala man died yesterday morning after his motorcycle hit a car Sunday afternoon on Kawaihae Road (Route 19).

Jason Phillips, of Waimea, was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle west down Kawaihae Road less than half a mile from the 61-mile marker when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a 1994 Honda sedan around 4 p.m., police said.

Phillips, who was not wearing a helmet, was thrown and suffered head injuries.

The driver of the Honda was not injured.
