Wahine picked to finish second in WAC

The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team was picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference in the preseason coaches' poll yesterday.

The Wahine received one first-place vote and 69 points. Perennial national power Louisiana Tech, new to the WAC this season, received nine first-place votes and finished with 81 points.

"I knew who was going to be on the top," said UH coach Vince Goo referring to Louisiana Tech.

The Lady Techsters have played in all 20 women's NCAA tournaments, winning two national championships and appearing in 13 final fours.

The Wahine finished the 2000-01 season with a 26-8 record and advanced to the WNIT semifinals.

"We have only one returning senior (guard Janka Gabrielova) and to be picked that high, I think, maybe the coaches were looking at our tradition or could be they have a lot of respect for the younger players who were on the team last year," Goo said.
