Wahine star WAC Player of Week

Advertiser Staff

Kim Willoughby, Hawai'i's sophomore outside hitter, was named the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced yesterday.

Willoughby led the Wahine, currently ranked No. 12 in the USA Today/AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25, to victories over Southern Methodist and Texas-El Paso last weekend.

She averaged 8.29 kills per game and had a school-record 36 for a four-game match against the Miners.

Against SMU, Willoughby amassed her league-leading 11th double-double of the season, recording 22 kills and 13 digs.

BASKETBALL

Wahine recruiting: While the University of Hawai'i Wahine were anticipating the official start of the basketball season, next season was taking shape. Two recruits have verbally committed to UH in the past two weeks. Iolani's Trisha Nishimoto committed in August.

Callie (pronounced Kay-lee) Spooner, a 6-foot-3 center, and Penny Jones, a 6-1 forward, both confirmed they plan to sign a letter of intent with Hawai'i next month.

Spooner is a senior at Prairie High School in Vancouver, Wash. Last season, her team finished third in the state. She visited UH last month and also made official visits to Nevada, San Diego and Cal State-Riverside.

Spooner said her strong points are "aggression and strength — I'm pretty big." She went into her college search looking for a good business program and "coaches I can communicate well with." She thinks she found it here.

Jones, who hopes to be a nurse, is a senior at Cyprus High School and lives in West Valley City — about an hour from Salt Lake City. Cyprus finished third in the state last season.

Jones said she was also drawn to the coaches, particularly their individual areas of expertise. She was contacted by Oregon State, UNLV, Southern Utah, Air Force and Southern Utah.

Meanwhile, Amy Sanders, a 5-11 wing player from Huntington Beach, made her visit last weekend, and attended Midnight 'Ohana. She is also visiting Wyoming and San Francisco.

SOCCER

Wahine shut out: Freshman Kendra Cannon scored twice as Stephen F. Austin defeated the University of Hawai'i, 2-0, yesterday in a women's soccer match at Nacogdoches, Texas.

Stephen F. Austin improved to 7-4 while UH fell to 4-7.
