Show Biz
Traveling Fos thinking of returning home

By Wayne Harada
Advertiser Entertainment Editor

DOWN MEMORY LANE: Buddy Fo, former member of the harmonic Hawaiian vocal group, The Invitations, is back in town for an extended visit. He'll talk story with Harry B. Soria Jr. on the latter's "Territorial Airwaves" show, from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday on KINE-FM. Fo and wife Sammi had been long-time Maui residents-performers (30 years) before packing up to move to the Mainland. The Fos moved first to Florida, then trekked cross-country in a trailer home to visit a son in Alaska, performing Hawaiian music along the way (he sings, she dances). Following a brief Las Vegas residency, the Fos settled in Montana.

While here, Buddy Fo has been sitting in with the Don Ho show at the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel. He and Sammi may sell their Montana digs to return home ...

SIGHT 'EMS: When Sacred Hearts Academy sponsored its annual scholarship gala at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel last Friday, alumnae Dr. Sandra Chang, Dr. Letitia Diniega and Dr. Desiree Medeiros were honored for their achievements in medicine, bringing honor to the school and service to the community. All are faculty members at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. The hit of the night, however, turned out to be Melveen Leed, appearing as an oppressed but chicly-dressed Afghan woman belonging to Osama bin Laden (Leed does wild things, remember). As her headdress fell to her shoulders, she displayed a surgeon's mask with a replica of the American flag. The evening before, she was at Queen's ER after breaking her nose in a fall. Good thing Da Tita didn't bust her mouth, or she wouldn't be able to sing or talk ...

Oscar-winning actress Hillary Swank and her Emmy-winning spouse, Chad Lowe, were like lovey-dovey honeymooners when they R&R'd at The Manele Bay Hotel on Lana'i for a week. Swank won her Best Actress Academy Award for playing Teena Brandon/Brandon Teena, in "Boys Don't Cry." Lowe, who is the brother of actor Rob Lowe ("West Wing"), won a Best Supporting Actor Emmy playing Jesse McKenna in "Life Goes On" ...

RANDOM NOTES: Do blonds have more fun? Ask the guys in the Society of Seven, just back from Las Vegas, and ensconced in the Main Showroom of the Outrigger Waikiki. Seems Gary Bautista started it all, when he had blond tinges added to his mane; all but Tony Ruivivar followed ...

Lanai and Augie T's Comedy Cafe starts tonight at their Ukulele Cafe, with entertainment from 8 to 10 p.m. every Friday (but including Saturday this weekend). Compadres owner Rick Enos took his son Scott, now one of his restaurant managers, and chef Raul Puga, to Sushi Sasabune. Unexpectedly, owner and master sushi chef Seiji Kumagawa spoke to Puga in Spanish! He had lived in Mexico City for quite a while, so the two discussed food in Raul's native language ...
