WAI'ANAE — No matter what side of the ball he is on, Wai'anae's Kekoa Reyes will find a way to the end zone.

Reyes scored touchdowns on offense and defense in the Seariders' 27-7 win against Mililani in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference football last night at Raymond Torii Field.

The Seariders (5-2 OIA, 6-2 overall) clinched a playoff berth for the 18th consecutive year. The Trojans (4-4, 5-4) still clinched a berth because it already beat the only two teams that could tie them for the fifth spot: Campbell and McKinley.

"We needed this one to get into the playoffs," said Reyes, who shared time at quarterback with Caleb Paakaula, saw some action at running back and played safety.

Reyes score the first touchdown of the game as a running back, scoring on a 1-yard dive.

His score was set up by a Trojans' turnover during their first series of the game. Defensive back Shane Rodrigues recovered a fumble by Thompson Ah Loo at the Trojans' 39.

A 31-yard pass from Reyes to Darryl Correa gave the Seariders possession at the Mililani 8. On fourth-and-goal at the 1, Reyes scored to give Wai'anae a 7-0 lead.

Reyes also scored with 4:13 left in the game, when he returned an interception off Mana Au 51 yards for a touchdown to extend Wai'anae's lead to 21-7.

Whether Reyes will be used in similar fashion the rest of the season will be determined later, Wai'anae coach Dan Matsumoto said.

Reyes injured his shoulder late in the game and did play after that. Matsumoto said Reyes will be examined today.

While Reyes, an all-state defensive back last year, is looked to for big plays, the Seariders also had some game-saving plays by others.

Defensive back Kala Baptista had an interception and broke up a fourth-down pass in the end zone that stalled a Trojans' drive.

"He came through when he needed to," Matsumoto said of Baptista.

Also, punter Kalani Hoopii made the most of a high snap from punt formation, leaping high to get the ball, then still getting off the punt. At the time, the Seariders led 14-7.

"Sharp kid," Matsumoto said. "He plays soccer, so he's able to kick with both legs."

The Seariders scored on their second possession of the game, putting together an 11-play, 92-yard drive that ended with a 17-yard TD run by running back Kawena Rosario with 10:26 left in the half to give the Seariders a 14-0 lead.

But the Trojans' opened the second half with a successful onside kick. They cashed in the bonus with a 3-yard TD pass from Au to Kaipo Patoc with 9:13 left in the third quarter.

Reyes got the Seariders insurance with his interception return. Later in the game, Paakaula hit Nathaniel Russell on a 31-yard TD pass with 1:43 left.
