Faulk might play if bruised knee improves

Associated Press

St. Louis running back Marshall Faulk missed yesterday's practice with a bruised right knee for the third straight day and might sit out this week's game against the New York Jets.

Faulk, the NFL's MVP last year, was limited to using a treadmill yesterday. Coach Mike Martz said he plans to use rookie Trung Canidate tomorrow.

But Martz left the door open just a bit, saying Faulk felt better than "even he had anticipated," and that a final decision will be made today.

"He'll let me know in the morning," Martz said. "He feels real good right now. His comment to me today was 'You know, I've played with this before, these types of injuries."'

Faulk, who has had two operations on the knee since November, declined to comment.

Martz said Faulk could set his recovery back if he tries to return to the field too quickly.

"You keep playing on that thing, you keep pounding it, you just make it worse and worse," Martz said.

BILLS

Rookie under investigation: Buffalo rookie running back Travis Henry is being investigated by police for what The Buffalo News reported was a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl.

The newspaper, citing unidentified law enforcement officials, reported yesterday that Henry allegedly had the encounter Sept. 23 in his home with the girl, who had lied about her age.

Hamburg, N.Y., police captain Daniel Shea told The Associated Press an investigation of Henry was under way but no charges have been filed. He declined further comment.

Henry was not immediately available for comment because Bills players were given the weekend off following Thursday's 13-10 win against Jacksonville.

Henry's agent, Timothy McGee, said his client has fully cooperated with police.

"It's an investigation and we know the facts," McGee said. "Quite honestly, it's the magnitude of his status that's causing the commotion. We feel comfortable that nothing will come out of it."

SHORT SNAPS

Eagles: Philadelphia defensive line coach Tommy Brasher had a malignant tumor removed from behind his right ear, head coach Andy Reid said.

The tumor was on the main salivary gland, called the parotid gland. On Thursday, doctors at Pennsylvania Hospital had to remove the gland to get to the tumor, said Eagles athletic trainer Rick Burkholder.

Redskins: Washington linebacker LaVar Arrington will not be fined by the NFL for his helmet-to-helmet hit on Cowboys quarterback Anthony Wright in Dallas on Monday night, a league spokesman said yesterday.

Arrington received a personal foul on the play but the league, according to the spokesman, determined the contact to be incidental because Arrington was blocked into Wright.

Patriots: New England receiver Terry Glenn could miss tomorrow's game against the Indianapolis Colts with a hamstring injury.

Glenn, suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy, left practice early Thursday and was listed as questionable on the injury report.

Vikings: Minnesota receiver Cris Carter and safety Henry Jones were fined $5,000 each by the NFL.

Carter taunted opponents after a 4-yard catch in the fourth quarter of Sunday's 31-26 victory over Detroit, while Jones had a helmet-to-helmet hit on Lions quarterback Charlie Batch in the second quarter.
