It's official: Les Murakami Stadium

The University of Hawai'i Board of Regents yesterday approved the renaming of Rainbow Stadium to Les Murakami Stadium in honor of the longtime baseball coach.

Murakami resigned from UH this year after suffering a stroke last November.

During his 30 years at UH, Murakami's teams won six Western Athletic Conference titles and made 11 NCAA tournament appearances, including a national championship runner-up finish in 1980.

Murakami, a member of the American Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame, had a 1,079-540-4 record.


COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

BYUH wins: Karla Ribeiro had 16 kills and Ashley Moeai 15 to lead Brigham Young-Hawai'i to a 30-19, 30-25, 30-25 victory over Western New Mexico in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Silver City, N.M.

BYUH is 10-5 overall, 6-4 in the PacWest. Western New Mexico is 10-12 and 3-5.

In another match, Montana State-Billings (13-10, 5-5) defeated visiting Chaminade (3-4, 6-9) 30-21, 30-21, 30-26.

At the Texas Woman's College Tournament in Denton, Texas, University of Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Henderson State, 28-30, 30-26, 30-27, 16-30, 16-14, before losing to No. 20 Rockhurst 20-30, 30-24, 28-30, 30-20, 15-5.

Hilo is 10-12.


TENNIS

BYUH player loses: Top seed Radovan Chrz of West Florida defeated Jan Krejci of Brigham Young-Hawai'i 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 in the semifinals of the ITA National Small College Championships yesterday at Plano, Texas.

In doubles, Krejci and Peter Madarassy lost in the third-place match to Carlos Llanes and Trevor Kiruki of Drury, 8-6.
