BIG ISLAND

Woman dies at Volcanoes Park

An Oklahoma woman died yesterday at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park apparently after falling 200 feet to a rocky outcropping beneath Kilauea Volcano's caldera rim.

Regina P. Stabler, 48, an officer with the U.S. Public Health Service, was reported missing yesterday morning by her husband, Hollis Stabler, said Park Ranger Mardie Lane.

The Stablers, from Tecumseh Okla., were guests at Kilauea Military Camp. The camp is inside the Big Island's Volcanoes National Park.

Rangers, Kilauea Military Camp firefighters and Hawai'i County firefighters searched the camp and the area immediately surrounding it. Just before 1 p.m., the searchers spotted the body.

She was found less than a quarter-mile from the military camp, Lane said.

A Hawai'i County helicopter flew a team of rangers to the floor of the caldera, and the team climbed up to Stabler. She was lifted by the helicopter to the park's heliport, then driven to Hilo Medical Center.

Park Rangers are investigating the cause of Stabler's fall, Lane said.

Woman charged in ex-husband's death

HILO, Hawai'i — A Keaukaha woman is expected to be arraigned in South Hilo District court tomorrow on murder charges in the death of her former husband.

Genesis Eleakala Kauhi, 50, of 291 Baker Ave. has been charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm while committing a felony.

She was arrested early Thursday after her former husband was shot with a pistol.

Gaylon Baldado, 51, died later the same day at Hilo Medical Center following emergency surgery for wounds to his left abdomen. Police have declined to discuss events leading up to the shooting or why the former husband was in his ex-wife's home.

Baldado stumbled into a neighbor's home after he was wounded and asked someone to call an ambulance, police said. Emergency workers were notified at 5:14 a.m.

Police said Kauhi was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.

O'ahu teen to stand trial as adult

HILO, Hawai'i — A Big Island judge has granted a prosecutor's request to have an O'ahu teenager tried as an adult for the murder of a college student from Japan.

Michael Verece, 17, is accused of bludgeoning Tetsuya Takahashi, 20, of Fuchu City, Japan, to death in Kea'au on Feb. 18. Verece, who was 16 at the time of the slaying, is charged with second-degree murder, kidnapping and three counts of robbery.

Takahashi had taken the semester off from the University of Hawai'i-Hilo to obtain scuba certification before resuming his studies in marine science. On the day of his death, he was supposed to have gone to Honolulu to attend a course in scuba equipment repair.
