LCC gets excited about education

By Esme Infante Nii

Until about six years ago, when Cindy Martin first took on organizing the keiki-games portion of the annual Leeward Community College Family Fun and Craft Fair, it had only a handful of kid attractions. Fast forward now to the 12th fair on Saturday at the campus, when the "Excitement in Education" segment of the event will offer more than 25 activities that will have kids learning without realizing it. They can build structures from marshmallows and dry spaghetti (here, Nicole Saiki and Lauren Saiki do it under LCC student Marc Contee's guidance), blow square soap bubbles, make a harmless play slime, and more. "We have to show (kids) that learning is fun, and that college is not intimidating," said Martin, an LCC associate professor. The 9 a.m.-2 p.m. event also includes 70 craft booths, a new-car show, and ceramics and white elephant sales. Admission is free. Information: 455-0483 or 455-0416.
