• Today is the deadline to register for two Small Business Fairs for local suppliers interested in working in the cleanup and restoration of Kaho'olawe. The gathering, sponsored by Parsons-UXB Joint Venture, is looking for local businesses — especially "Hawai'i-based small, disadvantaged businesses with strong, cost-effective performance" — with capabilities, equipment and skills useful in the Kaho'olawe Island Cleanup and Restoration project. The fairs are scheduled 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Honolulu Airport Hotel, 3401 N. Nimitz Highway; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Maui Beach Hotel, 170 Ka'ahumanu Ave., Kahului, Maui. • "10 TIPS FOR A SLOW ECONOMY" will be the topic of an address by Alan Yee, certified public accountant and managing partner of the Honolulu office of Grant Thornton, to the dinner meeting tonight of APICS-Hawai'i. The meeting is scheduled from 5:30 p.m. registration, at Pearl Country Club. In the address, Yee will present a "Benchmark Analysis" tool, helpful in identifying cash gaps in a company's operations, and quantify the actual value of improvement efforts. • Applicants on the waiting list for Hawaiian Home Lands are among those who might benefit from an upcoming homebuyer education course, "Realizing the American Dream: Homebuyer Education Learning Program for First Time Homebuyers," beginning tonight at Honolulu Community College. The course, also targeted for low- and moderate-income prospective home owners, will include instruction on renting verses owning, budgeting, fixing credit reports, home shopping and obtaining a mortgage. The four-week series of classes are scheduled 6 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, at Honolulu Community College. The course, which is being presented by the Waimanalo Community Development corp., is sponsored by the city, and Bank of Hawai'i. Free; registration is required. Call 845-9296.
