Kite surfer dies off Mokuleia

The body of a kite surfer was discovered around noon yesterday in the waters off Mokuleia Beach Park.

The 33-year-old North Shore man apparently was knocked unconscious by his kite and drowned. He was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Woman shot in road rage

A 22-year-old Palolo woman was shot late Saturday night during an apparent road rage incident on eastbound H-1 near the Kalihi Overpass.

Police said a dispute broke out around 11:30 p.m. between the occupants of two sport utility vehicles. One passenger fired a handgun, wounding the woman in the shoulder.

She was taken to the Queen's Medical Center, where she was in fair condition yesterday. No suspects had been taken into custody yesterday.


Hiker rescued in Kalihi Valley

Firefighters yesterday rescued a hiker who had received head injuries after falling from a tree on the Kamanaiki Trail in Kalihi Valley.

The Honolulu Fire Department received the call shortly after 3 p.m. and dispatched a fire rescue helicopter and other assistance, said HFD spokesman Capt. Richard Soo. The hiker was airlifted from the trail and taken to a hospital. His condition was not available last night.


H-1 lanes near Liliha closed

The two left westbound H-1 lanes at the Liliha Street overpass will be closed from 11 p.m. tonight until 4:30 a.m. tomorrow for repairs.

The state Department of Transportation advises motorists to allow for extra travel time and to drive with caution through the area.


Detectives join homicide unit

Detectives Sheryl Sunia and Theodore "Ted" Coons have been assigned to the Honolulu Police Department's homicide investigation unit, succeeding Allan Castro and Hal Fitchett, who recently retired after 32 and 30 years, respectively, with the department.

Sunia and Coons join Anderson Hee, Cliff Rubio, Larry Tamashiro and Michael Tsuda on the homicide unit headed by Lt. William Kato.
