Eight earn berths for OIA football playoffs

By Stacy Kaneshiro
Advertiser Staff Writer

Entering the final week of regular season play in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football, all eight playoff berths have been secured. Of the eight teams, three have secured particular seedings.

Defending OIA and state champion Kahuku (7-0) clinched at least a share of the Red Conference title. And, by having already beaten Castle (6-1), the Red Raiders also secured the top seed for the eight-team tournament that begins Nov. 1.

The Knights have secured the second seed after their 36-29 win Friday against Kailua (5-2).

Meanwhile, Mililani (4-4) clinched fifth place in the Red. Campbell or McKinley could finish with the same record as the Trojans, but each has already lost to Mililani. The Trojans clinched by the head-to-head tie-breaker. McKinley meets Campbell Friday at Roosevelt.

In the White Conference, 'Aiea (7-0), Waipahu (7-1) and Roosevelt (6-1) have clinched the remaining three berths.

Na Alii can win the White title outright by defeating Roosevelt Thursday at Aloha Stadium. The Marauders have a bye this weekend.

Although Radford could finish 6-2, the same as Roosevelt if it loses, the Rough Riders would win the tie-breaker of common opponents. Roosevelt beat Nanakuli while Radford lost to the Golden Hawks.

If Roosevelt wins and creates a three-way logjam, they will be declared tri-champions, but a tie-breaker will determine seedings for the OIA tournament.

The playoff seeding is: Red 1, Red 2, Red 3, White 1, Red 4, Red 5, White 2, White 3.

Playoff matchups for Nov. 1 at Aloha Stadium has Red 1 (Kahuku) vs. White 3 at 5:05 p.m. and White 1 vs. Red 4 at 7:35 p.m.

Playoff matchups for Nov. 3 has Red 2 (Castle) vs. White 2 at Mililani and Red 3 vs. Red 5 (Mililani) at Moanalua. Both games are set for 7:30 p.m.

Quarterfinal winners clinch state tournament berths and advance to the OIA co-championships Nov. 9 at Aloha Stadium. Week 4 of the season — postponed by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks — was moved to this weekend and forced the league to skip a tier of playoffs. The state tournament playoffs begin Nov. 16.
