StarBand ISP serving Hawai'i

Startup Internet provider StarBand announced it is offering satellite Internet service in Hawai'i. The Mainland company, which has a distribution partnership with satellite communications provider EchoStar, will target rural homeowners too far from telephone lines to get dial-up Internet access, StarBand officials said.

According to StarBand's Web site, its high-speed Internet service sells for $70 per month, plus $200 for installation and $500 to purchase equipment. The service requires a 1.2-meter satellite dish. The company's Web site warned that costs could be higher in Hawai'i, where a bigger dish is required because the Islands are farther from the satellite footprint.
