Activities set at Koko Head

Koko Head Elementary School will be a busy place this weekend, with a family breakfast and an installation ceremony for student council on Friday, and its own version of Make a Difference Day on Saturday.

Parents and members of the community are invited to the breakfast, which will be served by school staff volunteers from 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. Adults meals are $1.25 and children's 35 cents.

At 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria, the new student council and representatives will be installed by members of the Niu Valley Intermediate School student council and area lawmakers.

On Saturday, parents and community volunteers will paint and spruce up the school.

Volunteers can come and give the whole day or as little as 30 minutes. The school has the supplies, but volunteers are needed.


WINDWARD

Kawa Stream to be discussed

Kawa Stream in Kane'ohe will be discussed in a public meeting Oct. 30 that will address the amount of pollutants in the stream's water.

The meeting will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Kane'ohe Senior and Community Center, 45-613 Puohala Road.

The state Department of Health will be the host of the meeting and will solicit ideas about improving the stream's water quality.

The stream is on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's list of impaired water bodies.

To be removed from the list, the amount of nutrients and sediment entering the stream must be reduced to allowable amounts.

UH baseball coach to speak

University of Hawai'i baseball coach Mike Trapasso will talk about the Rainbow baseball program and his approach to coaching at the Kapolei Rotary Club meeting at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Kapolei High School faculty/staff lounge.

Trapasso comes to the Islands from Georgia Tech, where he coached for seven years.

The coach begins his first season heading the Rainbow baseball program after taking over from UH coaching legend Les Murakami.

Trapasso's talk was originally set for Sept. 13, but was postponed because of the terrorist attacks.

The fee for the meeting, which includes a buffet breakfast, is $7.

Terrorism focus of meeting

A representative from the Hickam Air Force Base public affairs department will give a presentation titled "America's New Threat," during the Pearl City Neighborhood Board meeting starting at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Pearl City Library auditorium.

The discussion will cover terrorism and homeland defense.
